  • An International Family

    A Home Away from Home
Boarding students at Athenian get the most out of what our school has to offer. Our founder, Dyke Brown, envisioned a school in which students learn in community 24/7. Our day students are often on campus long after school ends but it is our boarding students who benefit from the close relationships formed by living with peers and faculty families.

Athenian is a place where you'll get to know yourself well, including how you prioritize, collaborate, and handle responsibility. With 25 teachers, their families, and pets living on campus (more than 70 people), a little guidance is always available. Living with a diverse group of peers from about 20 countries, you will gain group living skills while learning about other cultures and customs. Someone to help with homework or play soccer on the field is never far away.

Mentor Collective

Each of our new boarding students is paired with an older student or boarding alumnus as part of the Mentor Collective to help students adjust to living away from home.

  • Dorm Life

    Living at Athenian
When you join our boarding program, you become a part of the Athenian family. Not only will you make friends with your new classmates and living mates, you will be paired with an on-campus faculty member as part of a family group. Residential “parents” host boarding students in their homes for family dinners, join them in the Main Hall for meals, and welcome them into their families. The Director of Residential Life coordinates on and off-campus activities for boarders that range from cooking competitions to weekend camping trips. There’s always something going on to get involved in.
Each dorm has its own Dorm Head, Assistant Dorm Head, Residential Dorm Head, and Student Prefects, who work together to create a safe, fun, and comfortable living and learning community. As a boarder, you will live in a double- or triple-occupancy room your ninth grade year. After that, you will have the option to live in a single room if available. Each of our three dorms has a common area, shared bathrooms, and a laundry room.

FABs, or Fun Activities for Boarders, offer students fun and free opportunities to venture off campus and explore the Bay Area. Destinations have included Sharks and A’s games, festivals, Muir Woods, beaches, and local museums. On-campus FAB’s have included games nights hosted by residential faculty, knitting and drinking tea, and a dumpling feast.

The San Francisco Bay Area, on California's northern coast, is known for its diversity: diversity of landscape, people, cultures, and politics. Within 25 miles of Athenian, you can ride the cable cars in San Francisco's historic neighborhoods, meet innovators in Silicon Valley, explore the food scene in Berkeley, and take in the view from the top of Mt. Diablo.
